An apartment fire has displaced about a dozen Damascus families from their homes, according to a county fire official.

It happened in the 26000 block of Brigadier Place on Friday evening.

Fire and Rescue Spokesperson Pete Piringer said flames were showing when firefighters arrived at the scene.

Piringer said the blaze originated in a third floor bedroom.

According to Piringer, 12 families have been displaced because of the fire. He said the fire caused an estimated $450,000 in damages. The cause of the fire has been ruled accidental, Piringer said.

Smoke alarms alerted residents to the fire, Piringer noted. There were no injuries to firefighters or people, he said.

On Saturday, firefighters plan to return to the scene to check smoke alarms and to talk to residents about fire safety.
