Ambulance Crew Reunites in Hospital, Medic Remains in Intensive Care

The two paramedics seriously injured in an accident on I-495, while they were responding to another call early Sunday morning, continue to recover from their injuries.
In an update posted on the Glen Echo Fire Department’s Facebook page, John Witherspoon, president of the Conduit Fire and Glen Echo Fire Department, said medic Tom Schryver remains hospitalized in intensive care.
He also noted that two other emergency medical technicians (EMT) who were not physically injured witnessed the horrific accident.
“Meghan Quinn and Wyatt Smith, the two EMTs who were not physically injured, are working through the emotional trauma of having watched their colleagues and friends get hit by a truck and be seriously injured,” sasid Witherspoon. “All are in the early stages of grasping that they have been through a truly life-altering event and not a mere traffic accident.”
According to Witherspoon, the four ambulance crew members gathered alongside Tom’s bedside for the first time since since the accident on Monday night. He said they also got together briefly on Tuesday night to celebrate injured medic Sydney Marshall’s 20th birthday.
Witherspoon also shared details about how the call was broadcast and the support the crew is receiving.
“As some are aware, Meghan’s initial mayday broadcast went out over the dispatch channel rather than the operations channel,” Witherspoon wrote. “The result was that her call was heard by large numbers of fire and law enforcement personnel, many of whom responded immediately from long distances. In some cases, fire and EMS responders were aboard apparatus and out the door before the tones sounded. Meghan, Wyatt, Sydney, and Tom are extraordinarily grateful to their colleagues and partners in the fire, rescue, and police communities for their overwhelming support not only at the time of the incident, but also in the days since.”
Many community members are asking how they can provide more support and assistance to the Glen Echo Fire Department‘s ambulance crew.
“Chief Leusch and I and all of us in the Glen Echo Fire Department family are grateful for these offers. As soon as there is an opportunity to consult with the four EMTs about their preferences in this regard, we will share details,” said Witherspoon.
