Adoptions of 11 Children Finalized During Celebration (PHOTOS)

As county judges finalized the adoptions of 11 children during a special ceremony Friday afternoon, emotions were high.

Tears strolled down family members’ faces as each child was introduced with their new last names.

“It’s very emotional,” said adoptive parent Stephanie Labetant. “It’s the second adoption we’ve done but it’s still very special.”

County leaders and staff from the Montgomery County Child Welfare Services hosted this event at the Circuit Court of Montgomery County in celebration of National Adoption Month.

Robert Scheer, founder of Comfort Cases,  was the guest speaker. Comfort Cases is a nonprofit organization that provides backpacks with essential items like toiletries and pajamas for children in foster care. Scheer, who was a foster child himself, explained the importance of having a supportive community for the families.

“Community was not built for us to worry about our house colors and whether our bushes are all the same size,” said Scheer. “Community was built for us to do what we’re doing today which is taking care of each other.”

“I am looking forward to watching our children change over the years and knowing we had a hand in that,” said adoptive parent Stephanie Labetant.
