A Friday Night Lights Out Homecoming (PHOTOS)
What do bees, New York, London, Rio de Janeiro, Abu Dhabi, seniors, a rally, a tug of war, princes and princesses, flatbeds, pickup trucks, a marching band, parents, candy, pink tops, Einstein and football have in common? Well they are all key ingredients that made up homecoming weekend at Quince Orchard High School.
During homecoming week all students were involved in the thematic decoration of the auxiliary gym to create imagined street scenes of the four major cities that were key to the landscape of the 2017 Lights Out homecoming. Parts of these crafted cities street scenes would be dismantled and re-positioned on borrowed flatbeds and pickup trucks to be paraded in front of the school and judges on Friday as part of the homecoming festivities.
Of course, no parade in North Potomac would exist without a marching band, flag twirlers, student waving banners and flags representing various ethnic groups, princes and princesses sitting on top of parent’s convertibles all throwing candy to the masses watching the parade. It was part New Orleans Mardi Gras and part Kentlands Halloween trick or treat with everyone enjoying a warm Friday afternoon, a few hours before kick-off.
Never mind that just barely 24 hours earlier on Thursday morning that same parade route was filled with dozens of Montgomery County EMS first responders who created an outdoor triage area for 30 Quince Orchard students all of whom were targets of some very angry bees when their nest across Quince Orchard Road nearby the Dunkin Donuts was kicked. Whoa, now that’s the way to kick-off the weekend.
The tug of war did not feature the two football teams, Einstein or Quince Orchard, but rather it was a struggle between teachers and senior students at the mid-afternoon rally. The teachers won.
As for the main event, the Friday Night Lights football contest, the students held a Lights Out event where they shrugged off their normal Red Army gowns for black shirts and cover-ups. Senior football players and families were honored by the home crowd before the game. The Pom team performed at half time in black only to do a quick costume change to honor Breast Cancer Awareness month by dancing in pink tops mid field at the 50-yard line on school emblems that were dusted in pink rather than the traditional school red.
