Council Committees Meet

The Montgomery County Council’s Education Committee at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, April 15, will begin its review of the Fiscal Year 2014 operating budget request of Montgomery College. The review is part of the Council’s examination of the recommended budget presented by County Executive Isiah Leggett.

In April and May, the Council will review the Executive’s recommended budget as it works toward adopting the FY14 County operating budget in late May. The budget will go into effect on July 1.

The Education Committee, which is chaired by Valerie Ervin and includes Councilmembers Phil Andrews and Craig Rice, will meet in the Seventh Floor Hearing Room of the Council Office Building at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville. The meeting will be televised live by County Cable Montgomery (CCM—Cable Channel 6 on Comcast and RCN, Channel 30 on Verizon). The broadcast also will be streamed through the County Web site at www.montgomerycountymd.gov.

At 27,453 students over three campuses, Montgomery College enrolls the largest undergraduate student body in the State of Maryland, surpassing the University of Maryland. The college served more than 38,000 students in credit programs in FY12.

County Executive Leggett recommended funding 99 percent of the tax-supported budget request of the college for FY14. The total recommended FY14 operating budget for Montgomery College is $279.5 million, an increase of $11.6 million (4.3 percent) from the FY13 approved budget.

The Education committee also will review funding for the Montgomery Coalition for Adult English Literacy and the budget request of Community Use of Public Facilities.

At 9:30 a.m. in the Third Floor Council Conference Room, the Transportation, Infrastructure, Energy and Environment Committee, which is chaired by Roger Berliner and includes Councilmember Nancy Floreen and Hans Riemer, will review the operating budget request of the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission. A 7.25 percent rate increase is proposed for water and sewer use.

At 2 p.m. in the Third Floor Conference Room, the Government Operations and Fiscal Policy Committee, which is chaired by Nancy Navarro and includes Councilmembers Ervin and Riemer, will review the non-departmental accounts referring to grants to municipalities within the County.
