Mythical Match-Up Challenge – Week 7
The good thing about doing the Mythical Match Up in this inaugural season is that you learn a few things and I am flexible enough to have time to make changes.
So in that spirit I am going to move up the Week 7 Challenge games to take place on this coming weekend (10/27). This will allow me to use the last ‘schedule week’ of actual play – November 2 as a play-in/playoff game to separate the logjam in the challenge standings. Think of it as – a conference playoff.
Why? The why is not so important as is how do you react to the inevitable.
Before I explain how this playoff will work – let’s go over the standings after six weeks and you can see where the logjams are.

Everyone is beating up on each other in this league – with one game left for Challenge Week 7 the Match-Up’s could have at least a 3-way tie for first place. To avoid this I came up with an 8th week of play – using the last week in Montgomery County football actual play.
Moving over to the METRO League we have some definition on the leader board but after Challenge Week 7 – we could be faced with a similar logjam.

Stone Bridge in my opinion is the class of this league but because it has fewer Total Mythical Points (MP) it places second to Quince Orchard in this league and the good teams like Good Counsel and Wise fall off because of non-reporting stats in earlier weeks of challenge match-up play.
Faced with this potential logjam at the end of this the first Match-Up season I have devised an 8th week of play. Basically, it is structured much like Montgomery County Playoff system. It’s a 6-team playoff where the best team plays the last place team (6th of 7 teams) in a one game playoff. Going to a 7th game – rather than ending on an even number of games makes it easier to determine a MMU Challenge winner.
Based on the week 7 standings and MP the playoff will look like this. MMU Standing Team 1 versus 6; Team 2 versus 5; and Teams 3 and 4 face off for the last game. The last/lowest team in MMU play (#7) is dropped from the playoff.
Should this not be sufficient to determine each league’s Challenge winner – we will go to the tiebreaker rules that I published in September.

Over in the Metro League for ‘actual-play’ we have a big test in the VA AAA Liberty play with Stone Bridge going to Madison in Tysons for a game that may decide that VA division champion. Quince Orchard plays at Gaithersburg on Saturday afternoon and these one-time cross-city rivals (Gaithersburg) may have to wait for the lights to be built at Gburg’s new football stadium before the electricity is returned to this rivalry match-up. For Friendship Collegiate their stats are already determined since they have an off week – and by the rules I will revert to stats as provided for their Oct 8th game against Silver Oak Academy (FC won 66-8). QO better have a good week against Gburg – or they could lose this weeks challenge match-up against FC. Westfield plays against Centreville – in a cross-town rivalry. Wise has a big game against CH Flowers but should win easily with having the best running back in the Metro league with Chase Powell.
In MoCo the big game of the week is Seneca Valley at Damascus – and I am predicting a win for the Hornets – 3 yards and a cloud of dust on a warm October fall eve may prove too much for the Screaming Eagles – because unlike QO, whom Seneca’s defense stifled – Damascus with Chase Williams will pass downfield – and they have the receivers. Too bad Damascus wasn’t in this years MMU Challenge. Northwest plays Sherwood and needs a win to move up into the 4A West State Playoff system. Sherwood on the other hand should have it easier if they do indeed lose because they are slated for the 4A North state playoff division – and there is little challenge north of the MoCo up in Baltimore County. Good Counsel plays at home against Arlington’s Bishop O’Connell – it should be an easy win for them. Bullis plays Landon.
Churchill has a BYE week in the MMU but plays against – not your rivals – Wootton. I am going over to see that Friday-Night-Lights game in the “54”.
