Brookeville: U.S. Capital for a day

 

In 1814 James Madison was President of the U.S. On August 26 of that year, and during the war, President Madison  left Washington DC and went to Brookeville MD and held up there  for a day. Since then Brookeville has been  known as the U.S. Capital for a day. There is a sign, as you enter the town of Brookeville from Olney on Georgia Ave as well as from the other directions entering the town of Brookeville letting you know this. There is an annual end of summer event and, picnic celebrating this day.  Plans are beginning now for the 200th anniversary celebration of August 26 in 2014.

Sandy Spring Museum changed their hours beginning Sept 1. The new hrs are Wednesday –Saturday  10am-5pm and Sundays 12-5. The museum has classes and  other new and  interesting  programs going on . For more information either call 301-774-0022 or go to the website www.sandyspringmuseum.org.

The soccer fields on 108 leaving Olney are still busy on weekends . Check the Olney Boys and girl club (OBGC) for new teams and  sports as the seasons change. There are signs posted all around about teams beginning for soccer, lacrosse, football and more. e

Summer is over and the Summer concert series at Fairhill shopping center in Olney on Thursday evenings that ran from June to September  is making way for the Fall Festival.  .  Watch for more details as we get closer.  For those that don’t know where the Fairhill shopping center is in Olney , here is the address. 18169 Town Center Drive Olney MD.  Check back for more Olney area updates.
