Two County Residents Test Positive for South African COVID Variant

Montgomery County COVID-19 Statistics for Feb. 2

The Maryland Department of Health reported 137 new COVID-19 cases in Montgomery County Tuesday morning. This is the lowest number of new cases in a 24 hour period since 121 cases were recorded Nov. 3. The county’s cumulative case count is 59,292.

Gov. Hogan announced Tuesday that state health officials and the CDC have confirmed two additional cases of the B.1.351 (South African) variant in Maryland. The two individuals, who recently traveled abroad, reside in Montgomery County.

The county reported on Jan. 30 that 231 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 in Montgomery County.

Montgomery County recorded three new coronavirus-related fatalities Tuesday, bringing the death toll to 1,269.

The county has a rolling seven-day average of 5.06% for positive COVID-19 tests, which is an increase of 0.09 from Monday’s average rate of 4.97%. The rate has been below 6% for a week after falling below 6% on Jan. 27. The county’s positivity rate is lower than in 20 of Maryland’s 24 jurisdictions.

Montgomery County leads the state in total COVID-19 related fatalities but not in total cases. Prince George’s County has 1,210 fatalities and the most coronavirus cases in the state with 68,295 cases.

Somerset County on the Eastern Shore has the most cases per capita with 88.3 cases per 1,000 residents.  Allegany County in the western region of the state has the second-most cases per capita at 88.2 cases per 1,000 residents.

Tuesday the state recorded 905 new infections, bringing the state’s cumulative case count to 356,541. This is the lowest number of new cases in a 24 hour period since 771 cases were recorded Nov. 3. But the number of COVID-19 tests, at 13,861, was much lower than typical Monday.

On Tuesday, the state reported 1,467 patients were hospitalized across the state with the virus.

Tuesday the state recorded 34 newly reported deaths, bringing the state death toll to 7,012.

The state reported a rolling seven-day average of 5.79% for positive COVID-19 tests Tuesday. This is an increase of 0.18 from Monday’s rate of 5.61%. The positivity rate remains below 6% for the fifth straight day.
