“Photographs” Exhibit

The city of Gaithersburg presents “Photographs,” featuring the works of photographic artists John Coker and Thomas Germer. The exhibit runs through September 9, 2012, at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park, 506 South Frederick Avenue, Gaithersburg, Maryland. Viewing hours are Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

John Coker creates photographic art focusing on single image reflections.  His first public body of work, “Reflections in a Lady,”makes its debut with this exhibit.  Each photograph captures a lady behind glass – in store windows, kiosks and bus stops – with surrounding street signs reflected in the glass. Coker’s work is the result of one single snap of the shutter, not a double exposure. He has stopped traffic in the middle of the Champs-Elysées, edged pedestrians off the sidewalk along the Thames, and stood on bus stop benches on Broadway to achieve his shooting angle.

As a photographic artist, physicist Thomas Germer likes to explore how lighting, color, and perspective affect object perception. In his featured collection, “A Different Form of Watercolor,”he explores the use of colorants in fluids. Inspired by a grade school science demonstration, Germer quickly saw the potential for an art project. In his process, the diffusion of the colorant controls the outcome, as dyes or pigments are added to water. Vases, glasses, and bottles, together with different backgrounds, provide the framework for many of the photographs in this collection.
