Avenel to Host PGA Tour Event in 2021
When the PGA Tour announced that the Quicken Loans National was leaving last year, the DC area was left without a pro golf event for the first time in more than 30 years. That changed today when the Tour announced that the Wells Fargo Championship, normally played at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, NC, will get a new home – albeit briefly – °in 2021: TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm.
Barring a change with the PGA Tour schedule, the tournament will be played at Avenel in early May of 2021. This is strictly a one-year arrangement. The reason for the one-year move: Quail Hollow will be hosting the 2021 Presidents Cup and will need to prep the course for the international matches. It is not unprecedented for a course to hold a regular tour event and a major in the same year but the Tour tries to avoid that scenario if possible.
Francesco Molinari won last year’s Quicken Loans National at Avenel. Previously, Avenel hosted the following PGA Tour events: the Kemper Open from 1987-1999, the Kemper Insurance Open from 2000-2002, the FBR Capital Open in 2003, the Booz Allen Classic in 2004 and 2006 and the Quicken Loans National in 2017.
