Northwest Wins 4A MD State Softball Championship Defeating Sherwood 8-4 (PHOTOS)

University of Maryland, College Park Saturday, May 27, 2017

Northwest last faced Sherwood on March 25th and on that day they announced that they were a team to be reckoned with when the Jaguars ended Sherwood’s 105 game winning streak this season.  It was only fitting that the two best softball teams in Montgomery County would meet again to decide who would be the Maryland 4A champions this season.

Batting first Sherwood scored two runs on three hits.  The Jaguars pounced in the bottom of their half of the first inning with five runs on five hits, basically taking command of the game and never looking back.  In the top of the 2nd inning Northwest’s defense show how truly good it was by ending that inning in spectacular fashion.  A drive to center field by #1 Amanda Berkley was caught by #00 Alexis Mack who launched a throw to home plate creating an inning-ending double play throwing out a runner who had tagged up and tried to score.  The defensive edge was clearly a strength of the Jaguars during the entire game.

Pitcher for Northwest Amber Yuille held Sherwood to 8-29 while recording four strikeouts in the game.

Amanda Berkley struck out four while giving up ten hits.

This was a great game played by two excellent softball programs.

Congratulations to Coach Ashley Barber-Strunk and the Sherwood Warriors for an excellent season.

Congratulations to Mike Horton and the Jaguars for winning Northwest High School’s first ever 4A Softball State Championship!!!

Pictures to follow…
