State’s Attorney John McCarthy Says Cell Phone Records Played Key Role in Murder Trial (VIDEO)

Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy said cell phone records, hotel records and financial records helped prove the state’s case against Larlane Pannell Brown (70) and Hussain Ali Zadeh (50) who were co-defendants in the August 2014 death of 73-year-old Cecil Brown of Takoma Park.

After a three week trial, both were convicted of second degree murder, prosecutors said. According to McCarthy, the two defendants were involved in a romantic relationship.

“They conspired together to kill Cecil Brown,” McCarthy said.

At a news conference at the Montgomery County Circuit Courthouse, McCarthy and two of Cecil Brown’s family members talked about the case.

Sgt. Richard Poole of the Takoma Park Police Department told reporters that cell phone data was a vital part of his investigation.

“This is one of the first cases that I had where cell phone and the information from the cell phone is what helped me the most. Typically, it’s interviews, it’s physical evidence but it was the cell phone analysis that really made the case,” Poole said.

Sentencing is set for July 26. The defendants each face 30 years in prison.
