“I do not plan to run this fall,” Drzyzgula wrote in a posting on Facebook and sent to a neighborhood list serve. “I expect our retirement plans will interfere with me serving a full term, and do not want to run without the promise of serving for four years.”

Mayor Jud Ashman said he had a sense that she would not be running for reelection, and he was “dreading it the whole time.”

“I have the highest possible regard for Cathy Drzyzgula,” said Ashman. “She’s a rare elected official. She’s not about glory or ego or politics. She’s always about getting to the bottom of issues, intense research and finding the best possible set of solutions for the city. I am going to miss her dearly.”

Drzyzgula said talking to the citizens of Gaithersburg one-on-one about their issues and concerns is one of the things she will miss most when she leaves elected office.

When asked about some of her accomplishments and marks on the city, she said open government and transparency, balance, and the representation she brought for the residents of the east side of Gaithersburg.

“She has been our most effective and thoughtful spokesperson for the east side of the city,” said Ashman.

Drzyzgula said she was also proud that the city leaders could work together civilly even when they disagreed on issues.
