Taking a Stand Against ALS (PHOTOS)

UPDATED Before there was the ice bucket challenge, several young Montgomery County residents were already spending a part of their summer raising money to help fight ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
For several years, North Potomac resident Kristen Webb said her 12-year-old daughter, Elise, has set up a lemonade stand to take a stand against ALS. She’s had a lot of help from her friends Katie and Emily Orr, too. Their efforts, this year, included the sale of baked goods and some handmade crafts. So far, this year, Elise’s team efforts have raised over $1,000.
“Every penny comes closer to finding a cure,” Elise writes on her marketing flier.
Along the way, she’s inspired even more young people to raise money to fight ALS, too, by setting up their own lemonade stands.
Webb said her daughter donates the money to the Walk to Defeat ALS, which is scheduled to take place on Nov. 1.
According to Webb, her daughter’s passion to make a difference was sparked by her grandmother’s volunteer work with ALS patients. You can see how her passion has influenced others to help in the photos, below.
