Street Beat: SHA Resurfaces Connecticut Avenue in Chevy Chase

road construction 450 x 280 for sliderDrivers who commute on Connecticut Avenue (MD 185) between Western Avenue and East West Highway in Chevy Chase should prepare for slowdowns as the State Highway Administration is now beginning the final stages of a resurfacing project. Weather permitting, the project should be complete by late fall.

The $2.5 million safety and resurfacing project began last summer and replaces deteriorated pavement along this section of MD 185.

According to the SHA, more than 46,000 vehicles use this 1.5-mile section of Connecticut Avenue daily. The contractor for this work is Fort Meyer Construction Company of Washington, D.C.

As the work continues, SHA officials are warning drivers to be prepared for daytime and nighttime lane closures.  To expedite resurfacing, crews may close up to two lanes of MD 185, weekends, between Friday at 8 p.m. and Monday morning at 5 a.m. and Monday through Thursday between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Crews may also close a single lane in both directions of MD 185, weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

So far, crews have completed utility relocations, inlet repairs, curb and gutter replacement, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant sidewalk, ramp construction and roadway patching. Remaining work includes removing the top layer of pavement, patching, and resurfacing all traffic lanes and applying new pavement markings to the roadway.
