I Feel Old (As He Smiles)

Here comes the next generation – and making the cut.

Tiger Woods came to Bethesda MD today and met with the media. Tomorrow, he will play in the Pro-Am of his signature tournament at Congressional Country Club. But, Thursday it’s for real.

Today Tiger admitted, “I feel old”. He gave that response to the world golf media gathered in the Interview Room just a couple hundred yards away from the 1st Tee at Congressional. His response was to a question about the upcoming next generation of golfers that he inspired.

“That’s just not cool, you know” he quipped. “That’s what’s coming, the next generation. And they are taller, bigger, they are more physical, just like in all sports across the board, and golf is no exception. You look at these kids in college; all the long hitters are 6-2 to 6-4. They are big guys and they can move it out there.”

In Tigers’ case he sounds as if he has matured at 38 and now will call on different parts of his game to challenge those NextGen players and try to get back in winning form. His mental approach to the Quicken Loans National is Tiger-est – he expects to win, but he knows and accepts the reality that recovery from his surgery this past March and his age are the new challenges – he’d be happy to make the cut for Saturday and play two rounds this weekend.

The locals who venture to Congressional, the sponsors and the larger golf world are all in his corner and hope that he is up to this – his next challenge – making the cut at Quicken Loans National.
