In honor of Mother’s Day, we asked local leaders to tell us about their moms and how their mothers inspire them today.

Councilmember Nancy Navarro says she honors her mother everyday and will be remembering her this Mother’s Day:

How has your mom inspired you through the years?

“My mother, Mina Navarro, was a very strong, generous, energetic and funny woman. She was authentic in everything she did, and totally devoted to her children. She came from humble beginnings but always set high expectations for herself and for us. She was everyone’s friend.”

What was her greatest gift to you?

“She taught me that everyone deserves respect regardless of status, giving is the most important thing in life, and one should always pray for wisdom and humility.”

How will you honor her this Mother’s Day?

“My mother passed away unexpectedly, on May 2, 2009- the day after my 2009 Special election primary victory was certified. At that time, my younger sister was in a hospital bravely fighting her battle with Breast cancer. My sister passed away in April 2010. That was without a doubt, the most painful and traumatic time of my life. My mother’s love and unbelievable strength carried me through that period. Since then I have understood that her presence, teachings, and legacy guides me in everything I do. I strive to teach that legacy to my two daughters, because it has been indeed the best gift I have ever received. On this Mother’s Day I will celebrate ‘mi Mami’ with flowers, music, and a toast.”
