Thefts in Poolesville Grating on Nerves
A heavy-lifting thief stole four storm grates and a manhole weighing hundreds of pounds in Poolesville this week.
According to Town Manager Wade Yost, over the past few days, four- 150-pound storm grates and one- 200-pound manhole cover were stolen from streets in the town’s Westerly neighborhood.
Yost said the town has filed a police report in the case, but the heavy heist is no joke.
“It is almost Halloween and when kids walk to school in the morning it is dark. You could really get hurt falling in these holes,” Yost said.
The town has replaced the covers and is working on welding others in place. Each of the grates cost about $100, he said.
Yost suggests if anyone sees somebody working with manhole covers or grates who are not in a Poolesville vehicle to call police at 301.279.8000 or town hall 301.428.8927 .Yost said this has never happened in Poolesville before and said it likely would take a crew of two to pull it off.
