‘Slam’ Poets Honored by County Council (Video)

YouthPoetrySlamTeamErvinGroup 11-19-13Montgomery County Councilmember Valerie Ervin welcomed some high school students up to the mic in the county hearing room Tuesday morning, and to the surprise of those there for county business, they quickly took control of their audience.

Their performances were riveting and shocking, bringing controversial topics of suicide and racism to the forefront of discussion through lyrical prose executed with confidence and grace.

The students, Hannah Halpern, Lauren May, and Thomas Hill, are from the D.C. Youth Poetry Slam Team from Split This Rock, an organization that operates youth programs year-round, offering learning, writing and performing opportunities.

They were honored by the Montgomery County Council for competing in the national Brave New Voices competition.
