WSSC: Water Main Breaks on the Rise
Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) crews are responding to the highest number of broken water mains since the temperatures plummeted earlier this week.
WSSC officials report there are currently 64 water mains in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties that need repair. That’s up from 45 this morning. Crews are currently at 13 different job sites fixing broken pipes and will work around the clock until service has been restored to customers.
According to WSSC, the water temperature of the Potomac and Patuxent Rivers remains lower than normal, despite the rise in air temperature. It can take a couple days for the extremely cold river water to go through our treatment process and distribution system, which is why water mains are still breaking in large numbers despite the air temperature increase.
If you’re experiencing a pipe break inside your home, call a plumber.
WSSC is responsible for water mains in the street and the connections to homes and businesses, but not the pipes on your property.
