WSSC Reports Sewage Spill into Cabin John Watershed

Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) officials are warning residents to avoid a sanitary sewer overflow area near 6120 Executive Boulevard in Rockville.

According to a WSSC news release, the overflow occurred at 11:15 a.m. on March 1 and ended that afternoon at 4:30 p.m.

It is estimated that 15,810 gallons of untreated, diluted wastewater entered an unnamed creek that is part of the Cabin John watershed basin at a rate of 50 gallons per minute, according to WSSC. The wastewater overflowed from a manhole cover caused by rags and roots creating a blockage in the sewer main.

WSSC reports that notifications have been made to the Maryland Department of the Environment and the Montgomery County Health Department. WSSC crews have also addressed the situation and signs have been posted warning citizens to avoid the overflow area.

With nearly 5,400 miles of sewer mains throughout its service area, WSSC officials said they appreciate notification from citizens if a sewer back up is suspected.
