WSSC Rehabs Damascus Water Tower, Community Launches Fundraiser for Paint Job
The talk of the town in Damascus is swirling around the water tower.
A local landmark, the Damascus Water Storage Tank is getting a $1.2 million rehab, according to an official with the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission.
WSSC spokesperson Luis Maya said crews are currently rehabbing the tank, which was built in 1990, and is located at 9950 Damascus Boulevard.
“We are currently finishing the sand blasting and priming of the exterior,” said Maya.
After that, he said the tank will be repainted and that is something residents in the community have wanted for years.
The new paint job will include a rendition of the Damascus High School’s mascot on the tank that holds 1.5 million gallons of water.
“We’re working with the community and have agreed to paint the mascot on the tower,” said Maya. “The community is paying for the painting of the logo, a hornet, which is $15,000,” Maya said.
The painting is expected to begin in a few weeks.
“Weather has delayed the project, once priming is complete painting will begin,” Maya said. “Weather permitting the tank will be painted by early summer.”
The community has set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for painting the hornet. So far, they have raised over $9,000. You can find out more, here.
