WSSC Commissioner Retires

After more than eight years, Gene W. Counihan is retiring as a commissioner for the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission.

Counihan played a key role in supporting a number of important initiatives and operational shifts at WSSC, including advancements in alternative energy, technological upgrades, environmental stewardship and sound financial management, according to a news release from the commission.

“I certainly have benefited from many associations with staff I have worked with over the years at WSSC,” stated Counihan, who was recognized for his service at the monthly Commission meeting on May 20. “It has been a good run and it has been a real honor for me to be a part of this group.”

Appointed as a WSSC Commissioner from Montgomery County in October 2007, Counihan has lived and worked in Montgomery County since 1963. His career includes elected and appointed positions in state, regional and county government, and 29 years as a teacher and administrator in the Montgomery County Public Schools.

Counihan was elected to and served three, four-year terms in the Maryland House of Delegates. After leaving the legislature in January 1995, he worked as a special assistant to Governor Parris Glendening before becoming the Maryland Government Relations Officer for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. His numerous community leadership activities include serving as Chair of the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce, the Montgomery College Board of Trustees, the Committee for Montgomery, the Board of Advisors at the Universities at Shady Grove, and the Olney Theatre Center Board.

Dr. Roscoe M. Moore, Jr. has also announced his intention to leave the Commission. That will leave two seats for Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett to fill. The County Executives of Montgomery and Prince George’s counties each appoint three Commissioners.
