Montgomery County hosts the World of Montgomery street festival on Oct. 20 from noon to 5 p.m. at Westfield Wheaton Plaza Mall parking lot. The free festival is a celebration of the rich cultural heritages of Montgomery County. Westfield Wheaton Mall has free parking and is a short walk from the Wheaton Metro station.

The festival event is an interactive experience where participants are able to engage in creative projects from the diverse communities that make up some of the largest immigrant populations in Montgomery County and the DC area. The exhibits include culturally authentic arts demonstrations and activities that promote international and multi-cultural awareness. The four countries highlighted this year are China, El Salvador, Ethiopia, and India.

The festival will focus on the “Essentials of Life” with a fun and educational exploration of the importance and use of water around the world; an expanded Global Kitchen, with local chefs demonstrating traditional dishes from around the globe and hands-on cooking projects for kids; a series of art projects reflecting on the bonds of family, culture and celebrations; and several service projects addressing needs locally and internationally.

“On Sunday afternoon October 20, downtown Wheaton will be transformed into a vibrant international village,” said County Executive Ike Leggett. “People have come to our County from every corner of the globe. I urge all Montgomery County residents to join us at the World of Montgomery Festival and help us celebrate the glorious diversity that makes our community so special.”

Sponsored by the Fund for Montgomery and organized by the KID (Kids International Discovery) Museum, the festival includes an international village, a global kitchen with chefs demonstrating traditional ethnic food, a craft market, a Parade of Cultures, two performance stages of traditional dance and music, opportunities to find out about connecting with the community through service, traditional arts and fun activities for the whole family.

The performance stage and Parade of Cultures will showcase dancers and musicians in native dress from a wide variety of international backgrounds. The international village will feature the countries of India, El Salvador, China and Ethiopia. A small sampling of the interactive activities at each tent include body henna art, playing of traditional musical instruments and an opportunity to try on a saree or a turban at the India Tent. At the Ethiopia tent, festival goers will have the experience of watching a traditional coffee ceremony, playing Ethiopian children’s games and writing their names in Amharic. When visiting El Salvador, attendees can learn how to paint traditional El Salvadoran art. China’s tent will feature exhibitions of the art of Chinese painting and traditional Chinese costumes, along with instruction for writing Chinese characters.

Admission to the festival is free and free parking is available nearby. Participants may also take the Metro to the Wheaton station, which is located two blocks away from the festival grounds. The address of the event is 11160 Veirs Mill Rd, Wheaton.
