World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Event 2012 is a Wrap!
The turn out was fantastic to this year’s World Elder Abuse Awareness Day event on June 15th. The County held their annual event at the Holiday Park Senior Center in Wheaton to a standing room only crowd. It looked like there were people from all age groups participating in the fun. The 1-3:30 p.m. event had visiting officials such as Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett and Councilman Phil Andrews along with members of the Elder Abuse Awareness Task Force from Adult Protective Services, Family Services, Ombudsman, MCPD and more.
Sessions were set up in different rooms with speakers talking about topics such as Downsizing and Decluttering, How to protect against Financial Exploitation, How to prevent falls, and Emergency Preparedness. There were police K-9 demonstrations and the Emergency Response Command Center bus was there for tours by event goers. Between the main speakers and activities there was blood pressure screening, Torn2Shredz shredding truck and exhibitors from local supporters like Holy Cross and Shady Grove Hospitals, The Red Cross and Senior Services companies. Between songs, Ellis Woodward was on hand to help announce the winners of the many door prizes.
All in all it was a fun filled informative event with a fantastic turn out. Kudos to Captain Kathi Rhodes and the rest of the Elder Abuse Awareness Task Force team for a wonderful event.
