Blog: Woodmont Country Club Prepping to Host U.S. Women’s Amateur in August

The U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship will be played at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville August 3-9.  With the coronavirus pandemic affecting everything, including sports schedules, the Women’s Am will be golf’s first National Championship contested this year.

As of now, no fans will be allowed to attend the event, but Golf Channel and NBC are providing full television coverage.  The United States Golf Association, the governing body that runs the event, announced Monday that it is transferring the broadcast rights to its championships from FOX to NBC.  The unusual move was precipitated by the postponement of the U.S. Open from June to September, which would conflict with FOX’s coverage of the NFL.

The U.S. Women’s Am is the oldest and most prestigious championship for women amateurs around the globe. It was first played in 1895. The last time the event was played in Maryland was 1959 when Congressional Country Club played host.

Past champions include Patty Berg, Babe Zaharias, Mickey Wright, Juli Inkster and Annika Sorenstam all of whom are in the World Golf Hall of Fame.
