Woman Faces Life-Threatening Injuries After Rockville Collision
The Past Day Has Been Dangerous for Pedestrians
A woman has been hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after she was struck trying to cross a Rockville street, a Montgomery County police statement said.
The woman was one of several pedestrians hurt over the weekend.
She was hurt about 5:20 p.m. Monday, trying to cross Beall Avenue at Gibbs Street, police said.
According to police, a 2017 Dodge Charger was traveling westbound on Beall Avenue when it struck her. The woman was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.
The driver of the 2017 Dodge Charger is identified as Anne Marie Sugrue, 24, of Gaithersburg, who was not injured, police said.
The pedestrian will be identified once family is notified, police said. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620.

County public safety and government officials have focused on pedestrian safety for years even though injuries and deaths happen regularly. Capt. Tom Didone said Friday that 13 pedestrians have died this year, through Oct. 31.
At a pedestrian safety event in Silver Spring on Friday, Montgomery County Council President Hans Riemer reflected on why it’s been an intractable problem for the county:
“I think a lot of it is that we have really outdated infrastructure. We have roads that were built 50 years ago, and the pedestrian was not really accounted for in the road design. And the volume of cars was not expected or it wasn’t really considered,” Riemer said.
People live around roads, leading to pedestrian crossings, but the roads themselves are designed for people to driver faster, he said.
“The faster the street design the more it encourages people to drive aggressively,” Riemer said. “Combine that with maybe pedestrians aren’t familiar with the rules, or they’re just taking chances. It’s a bad combination and it always ends up with people getting hurt.”
