Woman Dies in Aspen Hill House Fire

UPDATED, Sept. 4, 9:30 a.m. – The fire that caused the death of an 81-year-old Aspen Hill woman appears to have started in the basement, according to Fire and Rescue Spokesperson Pete Piringer.

Piringer said firefighters believe the home at 4610 Iris Street in Aspen Hill  did not have working smoke detectors.

UPDATED, Sept. 4, 8:40 a.m- The elderly woman rescued from her burning home Thursday morning has died.

Fire and Rescue Spokesperson Pete Piringer said the woman died at MedStar Washington Hospital Center after being pulled from the home by firefighters.

Piringer said it is the fifth fire fatality of 2014.

UPDATED, Sept. 4, 8 a.m. –  Nearly 100 Montgomery County firefighters were called to the scene of an early morning house fire at 4610 Iris Street in Aspen Hill.

Fire and Rescue Spokesperson Pete Piringer said firefighters have transported an elderly woman to the hospital with serious, life threatening injuries. She was rescued, he said, from the second floor. Piringer said two firefighters were treated for minor injuries.

According to Piringer, the house fire is now under control.

Aspen Hill Road is closed between Arctic Avenue and Parkland Drive because of the fire department activity, Piringer said.

No other information has been released to date.
