Winter Lights Proposal: ‘Marry’ Christmas (Photos & Video)
Love was in the air at the close of the Winter Lights Festival in Gaithersburg on Dec. 23 when a Damascus man asked his high school sweetheart to marry him at the end of the snowflake tunnel.
Andrew Montgomery came up with the clever proposal a few weeks ago, with the help of some city of Gaithersburg employees and his mom.
To pull off the proposal, it was important on this night that Montgomery was traveling in the last car to drive thru the 3.5-mile light festival at Seneca Creek State Park because he wanted to get out of the vehicle and formally propose on bended knee at the snowflake tunnel near the Kingfisher Overlook.
He stringed his own proposal sign out of colored lights that read, “Will You Marry Me?”
Carolyn Crosby, a city employee, played Cupid. She not only helped him coordinate the plan but she personally hid in the woods on the cold night to plug in the homemade sign when Montgomery and his girlfriend approached the magical snowflake tunnel.
About an hour before the proposal, Crosby and city of Gaithersburg public works employees at work in the park communicated on hand-held radios to track the progress of Montgomery’s vehicle.
As for the element of surprise, Montgomery told his girlfriend, Katelyn Kerns, that his family had won a special package that gave them the opportunity to get out of the car to take photos at the lights festival as the last car in the park.
The plan worked. The proposal sign lit up brightly during the pretend photo op and so did Kerns. She said yes.
There were smiles all around and lots of hugs as the Winter Lights Festival truly sparkled in Gaithersburg.
