The Walt Whitman High School girls basketball team was recognized by the Montgomery County Council on Tuesday for winning the 2016 Maryland State Championship.
The team was presented with a proclamation by County Council Vice President Roger Berliner during a Council session. The Walt Whitman Vikings defeated the Western High School Doves 71 to 55 in the Maryland Region 4A finals on Saturday, March 12.
Pete Kenah is a social studies teacher at Whitman High School and the head coach of the team.
“This is a group of true student athletes. Every single [girl] is a member of the honor roll and they were an absolute pleasure and joy to coach…[I] was so proud of how they represented us with great sportsmanship,” Kenah said.
