On Feb. 8, at approximately 1 p.m., Montgomery County police officers responded to the Wheaton Deli (located at 11413 Georgia Avenue) for an armed robbery call.

Officers at the scene determined that the suspect walked into the deli, displayed a handgun to the 47-year-old female employee, and demanded money.  Police said the employee gave the suspect money from the cash register and the suspect then ordered the victim to lie on the floor.  The suspect then fled the scene, police said.

According to police, the employee was able to provide a description of the suspect and that information was broadcast to officers in the area.  At approximately 1:08 p.m., police said an officer located a subject matching the suspect’s description in the area of Georgia Avenue and Arcola Avenue.  During the subject’s detention, a handgun was located in his jacket, police said.  The handgun had been reported as stolen from Georgia, according to plice.

The subject, identified by police as Damien West, age 18, of Laurel, was arrested and transported to the Central Processing Unit.  Police said West is charged with armed robbery, the use of a handgun in the commission of a felony, possession of a handgun, and theft: $1,000 to under $10,000.
