Wheaton on Council’s May 13 Agenda

The Montgomery County Council will discuss the future of redevelopment of downtown Wheaton and the potential location of a new headquarters for the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission on May 13.

The Council’s Government Operations and Fiscal Policy Committee and its Planning, Housing and Economic Development Committee have jointly met twice on Wheaton proposals, but were unable to agree on a recommendation for the full Council to consider.

The worksession on downtown Wheaton would lead to an adjustment to the County’s Fiscal Year 2013-18 Capital Improvements Program. The discussion will be part of a busy day for the Council as it enters final discussions on a number of departmental budget requests during its review of the Fiscal Year 2014 operating budget recommended by County Executive Isiah Leggett.

The Council is working toward tentatively adopting the FY14 operating budget on Thursday, May 16. Formal adoption of the budget is scheduled for May 23. The budget will go into effect on July 1.

The Council’s meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Third Floor Hearing Room of the Council Office Building at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville. The morning session and an afternoon session starting at 1:30 p.m. will be televised live by County Cable Montgomery (CCM—Cable Channel 6 on Comcast and RCN, Channel 30 on Verizon). The broadcast also will be streamed through the County Web site at www.montgomerycountymd.gov.

During the morning session, the Council will begin its final reviews of the budget requests of the Police Department, the Department of Correction and Rehabilitation, the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service and the Department of Economic Development. The discussion on Wheaton redevelopment will also be part of the morning session.

The afternoon session will include additional discussions on the budget requests of Montgomery County Public Schools, the Department of Health and Human Services and funding for the Montgomery County Historical Society.
