Wheaton High School Hosts ESOL Resource Fair

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett joined ninth and tenth grade students at Wheaton High School for a English as a Second Language (ESOL) Resource Fair Wednesday morning.

According to the Montgomery County Public Schools’ website, ESOL students come from various cultural, linguistic, socioeconomic and academic backgrounds. Students are tested and placed in classes appropriate to their English skills. Ultimately, the goal of the ESOL program is to help students develop the English language competency needed to succeed in an academic setting.

In his remarks to students during the resource fair, Leggett shared his background of growing up in poverty and how taking education seriously led to his achievements today.

“As a young child, I had difficulties trying to understand the importance of education at the time,” he said. “But you have something that is helpful for you. A loving community, teachers, counselors, and a support network within the school.”
