What’s Next for the Brood X Cicadas?

The Cicada Brood X invasion is getting ready to enter the next life cycle phase. Once cicadas mate and lay their eggs, the male and female cicadas start to die after about five weeks aboveground.

What happens to the eggs they’ve laid? Brookside Gardens Plant Collections Manager Phil Normandy says they’ll burrow and live underground for the next 17 years. A huge part of that process involves tree branches probably including the ones in your yard.
