Wegmans Opens Sept. 15 (Photos)
There is a lot of anticipation for the opening of the new Wegmans Food Market in Montgomery County.
Doors open at 7 a.m. at the Germantown store on Sept. 15, which is located in the Seneca Meadows Plaza near I-270 exit 16. Regular hours are 6 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week.
When it opens, the 123,000 square foot store, including a Market Cafe with indoor and outdoor seating, will employ 600 workers.
In fact, store officials are still accepting applications for future job opportunities both full-time and part-time for the new store. You can view open positions here.
Applicants can apply online at Wegmans Careers page. Interviews are conducted by appointment only.
“We’re looking for people who love to interact with customers and who take pride in their job skills,” said Germantown store manager Phil Quattrini, a 25-year Wegmans veteran. “Any position here can be a platform for career development. We’re all about developing our people. Wegmans provides some of the most in-depth product and service training in the industry.”
The company says it will have spent $1.8 million on training alone before the new store opens later this month.
The fact that Wegmans is family owned is also a draw for applicants. “It’s part of what makes us such a unique organization,” says Quattrini. “We have the flexibility to offer great benefits, competitive pay and a supportive work environment.”
The company’s employee scholarship program is a case in point. Founded in 1984, the program has awarded $85 million in college tuition assistance to more than 26,500 employees. For the 2012-13 academic year, Wegmans granted a record $5.05 million to 1,686 employees. When they meet specific academic, employment and work-performance criteria, part-time workers can receive up to $1,500 a year and full-time workers up to $2,200 a year for four years. There are no restrictions on the course of study.
Wegmans Food Markets is consistently ranked in the “Fortune Best 100 Companies to Work For,” and ranked 5th in 2013. Employee turnover is exceptionally low at 3.6% for this grocery chain which allows employees to reward one another with gift cards for good service. Many workers like working at Wegmans so much they bring in relatives; one in five employees are related.
