We Love Weekends: Montgomery County Planner for Nov. 9 – Nov. 11

This weekend is the perfect time for holiday shopping at Strathmore’s Holiday Market. More than a dozen non-profit organizations bring their museum gift shops to the Mansion at Strathmore. The popular holiday bazaar is back for its 29th year and it takes place from Nov. 8-Nov. 11.

Friday, Nov. 9

Mary Poppins Jr.  KAT Second Stage presents this Disney authorized reduction of the iconic Mary Poppins Jr.

The New Chinese Acrobats  Representing the evolution of Chinese acrobats, this group mixes new techniques and ancient Chinese folk art traditions. Take a look at the video below.

Contra Dance Contra dance is a type of folk dance for all ages and a social dance.  You do not need to bring a partner. There is a beginner’s lesson from 7:30 pm – 8:15 pm which is included in the price of admission. If Glen Echo Park closes due to inclement weather the dance will be canceled.

Sheila and Moby Flying V Theatre presents the story of Sheila, a successful young businesswoman who returns to her hometown for the weekend and is swept up in a tale of intrigue, suspicion and adventure. The play explores the power of imagination, the changing relationships between parents and children and what it means to grow up.

Saturday, Nov. 10

Trisha Gene Brady Workshop & Concert Gaithersburg’s Arts on the Green’s singer songwriter concert series continue with Trish Gene Brady who is a roots musician from Knoxville. Brady is known best for her seven year run as female vocalist for the nationally touring act, The Black Lillies. She has recently completed her first solo EP, which was released in the spring of 2018, and is working diligently with Alan Miller and Raul Malo on an LP project.

Tree Lighting & Street Party Tommy McFly is the host for the lighting of the iconic 35-foot public art holiday tree in downtown Silver Spring. Following the lighting there will be live music by Matt Shredder, holiday art station, food tastings and more.

Melodies of the Middle East  Iranian and Palenstinian performers will share ancient and contemporary musical traditions while visitors sample foods from Afghanistan, Egypt, Lebanon, Pakistan, Turkey, Syria, Iran, and the region of Palestine.  Hosted by the Montgomery County Middle Eastern American Advisory Committee, this event brings together people from many cultures to forge relationships and cultural understanding.

Docs in Progress: Shorts Program II  Docs in Progress presents their annual Community Stories Festival that features films made by local professional filmmakers, spotlighting local stories. Viewers will also see the works of first-time filmmakers who are learning effective storytelling and the technical aspects of using a camera and editing equipment. These stories showcase local individuals, small businesses, and nonprofits for the students to profile in short videos.

Elf The Musical  Based on the Will Ferrell movie, Elf has become a holiday classic. This warm-hearted family musical tells the story of Buddy, a human accidentally transported to the North Pole as a baby who grows up believing himself to be an elf, despite his large size and sub-par toy-making.
