UPDATED Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) crews are responding to a 12-inch water main break on Southlawn Lane in Rockville.

WSSC Spokesperson Jerry Irvine said the break, in a cast iron pipe, was reported at around 9 a.m. on Nov. 29, near East Gude Drive, and the water was shut off by noon.

According to Irvine, 43 customers are impacted and all but one is residential.

Earlier today, officials at the Animal Shelter on Rothgeb Drive announced the facility was closed temporarily because of a water main break in the area.

Irvine said the repairs are not complicated and typically take crews between four and six hours to complete.

He said the exact reason for the break remains unknown but he said this is a busy time of year for WSSC repair crews because of the stress low temperatures put on the system’s pipes. He said the break could very well be weather- related but he could not say for sure. At this point, he did not know the exact age of the pipe but said that information would be released when it becomes available.
