Water Main Break Closes Two MCPS Schools, Another Closes Because of Power Outage
UPDATED Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) officials have announced that both Wheaton High and Thomas Edison High School of Technology are closed today (Jan. 8) because of a water main break that occurred last night in the community.
According to Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) Spokesperson Jerry Irvine, the 10-inch break happened at 7 p.m. last night (Jan. 7) at 12610 Dalewood Drive in a residential neighborhood.
Irvine said it took crews until 2:45 a.m. on Jan. 8 to shut off the water.
He said the break impacted 12 customers, including the schools.
Repairs were made to the pipe by 7:30 a.m. this morning, according to Irvine.
He said the break is believed to have been caused by the extremely cold water running through the pipes.
By the end of the day on Jan. 7, WSSC crews had responded to nearly 40 water main breaks in the utility’s service area.
At 11 a.m., MCPS officials announced that Jones Lane Elementary School was closing at 11 a.m. because of a power outage.
