Washington Spirit Win 4-0 in Preseason Match Against Virginia Tech
The Washington Washington Spirit opened their preseason schedule with a 4-0 victory over the Virginia Tech Hokies on March 21.
The Spirit controlled a majority of possession throughout the match forcing Virginia Tech to get most of their attack on the counter or from set pieces.
“What was really exciting is that we were creating a lot of opportunities in different ways,” head coach Mark Parsons said after the match. “I felt that our ball movement and movement off the ball, for this stage, was really good. I think the biggest task now is keeping that standard.”
Estefania Banini opened the scoring in the 13th minute after receiving the ball inside the box, faking out the Hokie defender and slipping the ball past the keeper. This was Banini’s first goal wearing a Spirit jersey.
Just ten minutes later Amanda Da Costa fired off a hopeful chip after spotting the keeper off her line, but Da Costa’s shot was just a few feet wide. In the 44th minute Christine Nairn floated a well placed cross into the box, which connected with Da Costa, but she was unable to redirect the ball to put it on frame. The Spirit closed the half with a 1-0 lead.
The Spirit made a bevy of changes to start the half as Caroline Miller, Joanna Lohman, Estelle Johnson, and Kelsey Wys made way for Laura del Rio, Angela Salem, Alex Singer, and Emily Lillard.
Da Costa’s high work rate and dangerous chances on goal finally resulted in a goal in the 51st minute to give the Spirit a 2-0 lead over the Hokies.
Ten minutes later Da Costa slotted a ball into Nairn, which she blasted into the net from close range to further increase Washington’s lead bringing the scoreline to 3-0.
Del Rio tallied the final goal of the match in the 67th minute with a cheeky chip from the top of the box, which snuck in the upper 90.
The Spirit have two more preseason matches on the calendar including the University of Virginia on Saturday, March 28th and the University of North Carolina on Saturday, April 4th. Both matches will kick off at 7 p.m. at Maureen Hendricks Field at the Maryland SoccerPlex.
