Voting Rights Discussion at Boyds School (PHOTOS)
At a time when voting rights are once again being discussed at the national level as Congress responds to the Supreme Court’s request that the Voting Rights Act be updated this year, Congressman John Delaney (D-MD 6th District) hosted an event that coincided with Black History Month to get communities talking about what needs to happen to get more people to the polls.
“We obviously need to either implement the Voting Rights Act amendment that is being proposed in Congress or do something like that because right now we’re operating in somewhat unchartered territory because there’s no framework to make sure that voting rights are protected in parts of this country the way they’ve been for a long time,” Rep. Delaney said.
The panel discussion was held at the historic one-room school that was the only school for African-American children in the area for many years.
“Tying this into the Boyds Negro School, making sure that folks understand how people struggled and fought for voting rights really steps it up in terms of the responsibility for people to make sure that they’re exercising their right to vote that they’re out here and being engaged in the process,” said Montgomery County Council President Craig Rice. “We need to make sure we’re doing all we can to continue along those lines and make sure that we’re supportive of making sure that they can continue that for years to come.”
Topics discussed included the history behind the issue, the recent Supreme Court ruling in Shelby County v. Holder, and the Voting Rights Amendment Act — a bipartisan update to the VRA introduced this year.
