Veterans Special Airs on Channel 21 Today

The Montgomery Channel 21 will be broadcasting the Montgomery County Honors World War II Veterans special at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Sept. 25.

Veterans ranging in age from 86 to 105 and having experiences from some of the most historic events of the past century were among the 500 people in the capacity crowd in downtown Silver Spring for this event earlier this month. The event is believed to have been the biggest Washington area tribute to World War II veterans since the opening of the National World War II Memorial opened in Washington, D.C., in 2004.

Ted Koppel, who for 25 years hosted the ABC News show Nightline and now is a reporting contributor to the NBC News primetime newsmagazine Rock Center with Brian Williams, was the event’s host. He offered memories of growing up in England while U.S. troops were patrolling the streets of his neighborhood during the war. County Executive Isiah Leggett and Council President Roger Berliner and the County Council led the special ceremonies.

Other speakers included Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Maryland Lt. Governor Anthony Brown, County Councilmember Valerie Ervin, Bill Gray of the County’s Commission on Veterans Affairs and Merlyn Reineke of the PEG organization. Three veterans—Demetri (Dee) Paris, Albert Frumkin and Boris Osheroff—had full attention in recalling their war experiences and how those experiences affected their lives since.
