Elder Abuse Awareness Day (Video)

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett, Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy, Montgomery County Councilmember Phil Andrews, Police Chief J. Thomas Manger and Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Chief of Aging and Disability Services John J. Kenney will welcome attendees to the County’s third annual observance of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day today (June 12) from 1 to 5 p.m. The event will take place in the Great Hall of the Silver Spring Civic Building, One Veterans Place, Fenton St. and Ellsworth Dr.

There are nearly six million reported cases of elder physical and/or financial abuse every year in the United States, but the majority of abuse cases go unreported. Montgomery County has formed an Elder/Vulnerable Adult Abuse Task Force to address those concerns for the County’s more than 125,000 senior residents and their families.

Robert Blancato, national coordinator of the Elder Justice Coalition, will give the keynote address. Blancato is the past president of the National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and a former House of Representatives staff member who spent 17 years on the House Select Committee on Aging.

This free event offers a wide variety of exhibits and seminars about services and providers who address issues faced by seniors and their families. Some of the topics to be covered include: financial exploitation, emergency preparedness, de-cluttering/hoarding and resources in Montgomery County for seniors.

Montgomery County’s observance of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is co-sponsored by the Montgomery County Police Department, the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office and the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services.
