Community Stories Festival Set for Nov. 14 – 18

The Community Stories Festival, which takes place Nov. 14 – Nov. 18, will feature two nights of screenings of films about local people and places as well as filmmaking workshops and interactive storytelling sessions.

Organized by Docs in Progress, a Silver Spring based arts nonprofit, this five-day event will be held at several venues around Silver Spring and Takoma Park.

Nov. 14:
Locally-produced films about Takoma Park will be presented at the Takoma Park Community Center. Film subjects include the Institute for Musical Traditions, artist Howard Connelly and Main Street Takoma’s annual reCYCLE Art Project, , the Crossroads Market, Food Truck Fridays, Takoma Plays, the Washington Area Wheelchair Society, Arts for the Aging, clock artist Randall Cleaver, Cafe La Mano, and Dolci Gelati.

Following the screenings, there will be a Q&A with the filmmakers and some of the people featured in these documentaries.

Nov. 15:
On Nov. 15, the public is invited to participate in a salon on nostalgic representations of hometowns in documentaries.

Nov. 16:
Docs In Progress is presenting a day long series of film making workshops. Get details here.

Nov. 17:
Share your Silver Spring Story at an interactive oral storytelling workshop for people of all ages at the Silver Spring Civic Building.

Nov. 18:
Locally-produced films about Silver Spring, including several made by youth participating in a summer program partnership with Montgomery Community Media, will be featured at at AFI on Nov. 18.
Films to be featured spotlight local people, places, and events in and around Silver Spring, including the Silver Spring Library, Fenton Street Cafe, Shepherd’s Table, Arts clothing artist Sarah Gingold, Arts on the Block’s ARTpreneurs program at the Fenton Street Market, the Asian-Latino Pop-Up Museum, Fenwick Beer and Wine, the National Capital Trolley Museum, and the two locally filmed youth-produced music videos.

Following the screenings, there will be a Q&A with the filmmakers and some of the people featured in these documentaries.
