USG Students Present Solutions to Fight Hunger in Montgomery County (PHOTOS)

They are hungry for solutions. Students from The Universities at Shady Grove (USG) presented a series of proposals to fight hunger in Montgomery County.

The Hungry for Solutions Expo took place April 16 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., and the program was part of USG’s Civic Engagement Series 2015.

“Today we’re talking about who is fighting for food security in Montgomery County. We have community partners. There are fifty one agencies in Montgomery County that actually fight hunger in our community,” said Susan Callahan, chef and faculty advisor for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore at the Universities at Shady Grove.

According to a news release, this expo is the second part of a two-part initiative. Part one was the was the “Hunger Solutions Challenge.”

Students were tasked with developing a new solution to address a specific challenge that is contributing to the percentage of residents suffering hunger in Montgomery County.

The event also featured tastings of “repurposed” food and visiting representatives of local and national organizations such as Dawson’s, Whole Foods, MCPS, Manna Food Center, Hungry Harvest, Dwelling Place, Shepherd’s Table, Growing Soul, Campus Kitchens, the Montgomery County Food Council, the Community Food Rescue and others.

Speakers at the event included representatives from Burness Communications, Montgomery County Executive’s Office, Kaiser Permanente, Nourish Now, and Sodexo.

According to the new release, more than 78,000 people are deemed to be “food insecure” in Montgomery County, 23 percent of all solid waste is food waste, and one in three children in Montgomery County Public Schools is on the free and reduced meals program.
