Two Silver Spring Residents Among Three Dead in East West Highway Accident
Three people, including two from Silver Spring, died at the scene of in a single car accident Sunday morning.
On Monday, police released the names of the following three people who died in the crash: Melissa Roxanna Argueta, 24, of the 8300 block of Navahoe Drive in Silver Spring; Cesar Alarcon Noriega, 21, of the 1300 block of Meridian Place NW in Washington, D.C. and Yeny Karina Vicente DeLeon, 23, of the 8600 block of Piney Branch Road in Silver Spring.
The driver of the car that veered off East West Highway about 3:20 a.m. is identified as: Evelyn Martinez, 32, of the 5400 block of Whitfield Chapel Road in Lanham. She survived the accident, according to police.
Other passengers who survived the crash are: Carlos Domingo Cartonga Flores, 25, of the 8700 block of Carroll Avenue in Silver Spring; Christian Johanna Ortiz, 23, of the 8800 block of Piney Branch Road in Silver Spring; Jaquelin Amarlis Funes, 20, of the 4400 block of Sigsbee Road in Silver Spring and Oscar Catonga Fores, 32, of the 8700 block of Cordell Avenue in Silver Spring.
According to a police press release at about 3:20 a.m., responded to the scene and determined that eight people had been in the vehicle at the time of the collision. Three passengers were declared dead at the scene and the five additional occupants, including the driver, were transported to local hospitals, according to police.
Preliminary investigation indicates that a 2003 Chevrolet Suburban was traveling east on East-West Highway and in the area of Washington Avenue, left the roadway and struck a tree. The vehicle came to rest on its side. Detectives are exploring the possibility that speed, alcohol, and unrestrained passengers (not wearing seat belts) were factors in this collision.
