Two More Arrested for DUI as Police Investigate Fatal Crash

While Montgomery County police officers were investigating Saturday a traffic death allegedly caused by alcohol, two other drivers arriving at the crash scene were arrested for driving under the influence, a police statement released Tuesday said.

The arrests occurred as a portion of Rockville Pike was closed after a BMW driver hit a scooter driver. The scooter driver died; police charged the BMW driver with DUI.

Two marked Rockville City police cruisers, with lights flashing, blocked Rockville Pike and Templeton Place while county police investigated the collision.

About 1:50 a.m. Sunday, a vehicle approached the intersection, stopped, and did not move for several minutes, police said. An officer approached the vehicle to assist the driver and saw that he was showing signs of impairment, police said.

The 27-year-old driver was subsequently arrested for DUI.

About 3:50 a.m., when a vehicle failed to stop at the road closure, police said. The vehicle ran over traffic cones and drove past a State Highway Administration dump truck that was parked in the road and was displaying flashing lights and “Road Closed” signs, police said.

Detectives, hearing the approaching vehicle and the sounds of the car hitting the traffic cones, tried to signal for the car to stop.

Recognizing that the car was not slowing, the detectives moved from the road. The car continued through the collision scene and was stopped by the Sergeant of the Collision Reconstruction Unit.  The 20-year-old female driver was arrested for DUI, police said.
