Twinbrook Extreme Cleanup (Photo)

twinbrookextremeDozens of volunteers participated Saturday, April 6 in a cleanup of the Twinbrook portion of Rock Creek Park—a site organized by The JBG Companies as part of the Fifth Annual Rock Creek Extreme Cleanup held by the Rock Creek Conservancy.

About 50 volunteers hauled an estimated 4,000 pounds of trash and other debris from the park during the Twinbrook Extreme Cleanup. The effort was conducted in a wooded area off Fishers Lane, near JBG’s Twinbrook Station mixed-use development, its Health and Human Services campus and its adjacent National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease building, which is under construction.

“We are so grateful for the support of our volunteers,” said Rod Lawrence, a JBG partner. “This is our second year working with the Rock Creek Conservancy to clean up this area of Rock Creek Park, and the impact we’ve been able to make on improving and protecting Twinbrook’s local watershed has been phenomenal. JBG organized the efforts, but it’s the volunteers who’ve made it happen.”

Volunteers young and old carried old bikes, tires and other discards from the park along with scores of garbage bags stuffed with bottles, cans and trash, filling a construction-sized Dumpster.

JBG believes it is important to give back to the communities in which it does business, and the Twinbrook area has a unique alignment of nature and commerce that JBG is working to enhance. “Organizing the Rock Creek cleanup with the Conservancy is a natural extension of our commitment to the Twinbrook community and directly reflects JBG’s respect for the environment,” Lawrence said.

The Rock Creek Extreme Cleanup is part of the Alice Ferguson Foundation’s Potomac River Watershed Cleanup that takes place across four states and the District of Columbia in April. The effort helps keep trash out of the Potomac River, the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.
