Troopers Release Results of Labor Day Holiday Traffic Enforcement Efforts

Over the Labor Day weekend, Maryland State troopers report they made approximately 8,075 traffic stops, issued 5,493 citations and 4,720 warnings. They also made 126 drunk driving arrests and issued 866 repair orders for defective vehicle equipment.

Troopers announced Sept. 3 they would be conducting high visibility traffic enforcement across the state over the three-day holiday weekend. Operation SHOWBOAT (SHOre-Wide Bullseye On Aggressive Traffic) and Operator Millipede focused on aggressive driving, crash reduction, and impaired driving, police said.

According to troopers, Operation SHOWBOAT targeted its efforts along U.S. Route 50 from Anne Arundel County to Ocean City and U.S. Route 13 in Wicomico, Somerset and Worcester counties. Operation Millipede is focused on I-95 from the Delaware line to the Virginia line. During these two initiatives, police report there were no fatal or serious crashes.

In support of the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, S.P.I.D.R.E., a full-time drunk driving enforcement team, was out this weekend in areas of Prince George’s County where drunk drivers and drunk driving crashes are known to be prevalent. Police say the team arrested 20 impaired drivers and issued over 120 citations and note that five of those drivers arrested were repeat offenders.

Troopers say these high visibility enforcement efforts are designed to reduce the number of motor vehicle crashes in which speed, alcohol and other driving violations are contributing factors. Maryland State Police say they will continue initiatives throughout the year.
