Traffic and Golf Course Redevelopment Top Concerns at Meeting in Montgomery Village (VIDEO)

About 70 people attended a meeting at the Gaithersburg Library Monday night to talk about the development of the Montgomery Village Golf Course, transportation issues and crime in the Montgomery Village area.

Montgomery County Council President Craig Rice hosted the meeting fielding questions mostly about the redevelopment of the golf course planned by Monument Realty. That development company has a proposal to put about 400 to 600 homes on the 147-acre property.  Golfers are expected to tee off final rounds at the course Nov. 30. The project is part of a master plan process for the community.

Several members of community requested a special standing committee independent of the Montgomery Village Foundation be created to contribute to the discussion about the redevelopment.

Not included in that Montgomery Village  master plan is the Mid-County Highway project which was moved to the East Gaithersburg Master plan that has a later approval schedule. Rice said he didn’t want to hold up the master plan update in Montgomery Village by including the M-83 project.

The Montgomery Village mater plan process kicks off Oct. 1 at Watkins Mill HIgh School from 7 to 9 p.m. The current schedule shows an anticipated completion date of March 2016.

The Department of Transportation is expected to submit an environmental innpact report on the Mid-County Highway project next month. There is no funding for the M-83 project beyond the project’s preliminary design.

About a dozen people at the meeting wore anti-M-83 stickers showing their disapproval of the transportation project. Many were members of  The Coalition for Transit Alternative to Mid-County Highway Extended. The group supports public transit as an alternative to the road from Goshen to Brink roads.
