Tour de Cookie Looking for ‘Sweet’ Sponsors
Food motivation is the name of the game when it comes to the annual Tree House Child Assessment Center of Montgomery County “Tour de Cookie” bike ride in Rockville.
The non-competitive ride through Rockville is a twist on the average fundraiser, taking riders from cookie stand to cookie stand in a ride that could be 14 or 40 miles depending on the rider’s ambition.
“It is perfect for families and children of all ages, as well as serious cyclists,” said Nina Blecher, an event organizer with the Tree House Child Assessment Center. “We started the Tree House Tour de Cookie in 2013 as an attempt to get families involved in our cause. We were seeking a unique event that would engage families in our community. Who doesn’t love biking and cookies?”
The center is dedicated to reducing trauma and promoting healing for child victims of physical abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect through assessments, victim assistance and mental health therapy. The event was their biggest fundraiser last year.
“From the outset, our goal has been to raise awareness of the need to assist victims of child abuse in Montgomery County,” Blecher said. “Although, raising money is not our main goal, all the proceeds from the Tree House Tour de Cookie support the services we provide, at no charge, to victims of abuse at The Tree House.”
The 2nd annual fundraiser takes place on May 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., starting at The Universities at Shady Grove. The center is currently looking for sponsors and organizations to run cookie stands by cooking 500 to 600 cookies and handing them out as riders approach their booth.
“We’ve seen many biking events, but never one that combines the sport with baked goods,” Blecher said. “We want to have fun, meet the families in our community, and raise awareness of child abuse in Montgomery County. The Tree House Tour de Cookie does all three of these things.”
Tickets for riders cost $50 and entry fees for a team of 10 or more is $45 per person.
